Christ's Church
Believing Christ's strategy for glorifying God among the nations is a growing movement of vital, reproducing churches - churches that reproduce vital disciples, leaders and congregations.

Movement Leaders
Believing reproducing vital leaders is at the heart of Christ's master plan for reproducing vital churches.

Radical Dependence
Believing Christ builds his church by means of disciples who trust in the power of God's Word, God's Spirit and God's delight in prevailing prayer.

Loving Interdependence
Believing Christ's glory is displayed and his cause advanced when disciples, leaders and churches serve him together in loving unity.

Cultural Synergy
Believing that a multicultural movement of churches and leaders is essential to fulfilling Christ's desire for his church — a worshipping community redeemed and reconciled from all nations.

Welcome - Church Planting

Thanks for checking out church planting in the Minnesota Baptist Conference!

We call ourselves Team Minnesota and seek to support, encourage, and resource church planters and church plants throughout Minnesota. Perhaps you're familiar with the quote that church planting is considered the most effective means of evangelism under heaven. When qualified and called planters are equipped, coached, prayed for, and encouraged, amazing things happen.

The primary way that Team Minnesota plants new churches is through a parenting model...a church, or group of churches gives birth to a new daughter church. Here's what church planter and church consultant Ed Stetzer has said regarding new churches, "Both churches and denominations are discovering that it is almost always better for the health of new church plants to come from involved mother churches, rather than from denominational leadership."

Take some time and do a little surfing through our church planting webpages. Below you'll find some links you might find helpful. Perhaps church planting is something God has in store for you. If you feel the need to "kick the tires" of church planting in Minnesota, please contact us with your questions and for more information.

Blessings!

It was my privilege to be raised in a Christ-centered home. My parents, Howard and Carol Carlson, taught us to love the Lord and one another. My father was a pastor and served in churches in Minnesota, Illinois, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. During my high school years we moved to southern California when Dad became the Executive Minister of the Southwest Baptist Conference. As a child, I have a clear memory of kneeling with my dad and praying to receive Jesus Christ as my Savior. This decision as a child led to my baptism by immersion when I was ten years old. Over the years I recommitted my life to Christ as challenges were heard at church camps, evangelistic meetings, and in other spiritual settings. It was in 1976 at Hume Lake Camp in California, as a teenager, where I sensed God calling me to full-time ministry. I openly acknowledged this at a chapel commitment service. This led me to Bethel College, where I graduated with a Business major and Bible minor in 1980. My formal pastoral training started with pursuing an M.Div. degree at Bethel Seminary, St. Paul. During these years I was fortunate to have the opportunity to serve as an intern at Wooddale Church, where I was licensed. A call to serve at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, Escondido, California, proved to be a significant opportunity, while completing my seminary training at Bethel Seminary, San Diego. Sarah and I spent a total of almost seven years in this challenging church ministry. It was there I was ordained. Serving there as Associate Pastor was xcellent preparation for the call which came to return to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and become the Senior Pastor of Faith Baptist Fellowship. These past 18 years of growth, challenge, and fruitfulness are some of the best days of my life and ministry. God gave us a great pastoral team, church staff, and committed lay leaders. Together, we saw God's work prosper and grow there. As a church we were blessed and honored to host the BGC annual Pastors' Prayer Gathering for the past 15 years. Each year God touched and encouraged pastors to renew their calling and rededicate their efforts in service for our Lord. The example of my father, Howard Carlson, and the mentoring of several BGC leaders has been invaluable. Serving in God's Kingdom is a humbling privilege. This new opportunity of serving Christ through the ministry of the Minnesota Baptist Conference brings me great challenge and excitement. Please pray for me and the onderful family God has given Sarah and me. Click here to access the "Welcome Flyer".

The character and values of the Minnesota Baptist Conference may best be understood by: Our churches are multi-generation but are growing through their attractiveness to young families. Our theology is biblically conservative but without edginess and suspiciousness of fundamentalism. We are diverse in the distinctive expressions of God’s work in our world, with congregations that are teaching-centered, grace-based, spirit-filled, seeker sensitive, purpose driven and those that are oriented to justice and reconciliation.

Stated more formally:
The Conference is a fellowship of churches whose theology is biblically evangelical; whose character is multi-ethnic; whose spirit is positive and affirmative; whose purpose is to fulfill the Great Commission through evangelism, discipleship and church planting; and whose people celebrate openness and freedom in the context of Christ’s lordship.

The Minnesota Baptist Conference is a dynamic network of over 180 churches. Our immigrant Swedish roots give us a foundation of nearly 150 years of ministry in the Midwest. Yet our evangelical passion, biblical theology and contemporary worship styles have made our churches an attractive option for families looking for something solid, yet something exciting.

The Minnesota Baptist Conference, according to a recent survey, was the fastest growing religious group in the state of Minnesota, increasing in total worship attenders by 45.8% in the decade of the 90's.

Our outreach is to those who have no church home. Many in Minnesota are disillusioned with religion. They have felt the sting of legalism with its impossible demands. Some have seen hypocrisy. Others have had no religious background and therefore see Christianity as irrelevant. The missing element has been healthy relationships with mature believers in Jesus.

1. Our Mission Statement
As a fellowship of churches, we covenant to do together what we cannot do alone in reaching people for Christ in our State.

2. Our Biblical Mandate
Minnesota is our mission field in the Minnesota Baptist Conference. The Great Commission in Acts 1:8 compels us to not only reach our Jerusalem (our local communities) and the uttermost parts of the earth (foreign missions), but to strategize together how to reach the region of our Judea (Minnesota) and peoples within our region who are culturally separated from us (our Samarias).

3. Our Values Statement
The Minnesota Baptist Conference is a family of churches with a rich heritage, rooted in a strong evangelical theology. Together we seek to explore a vision for mission in our State which is responsive to God and geared to the times. We seek to be inclusive, cooperative and encouraging in all that we do.

4. Our Strategy Statement
The mandate of this organization is therefore a missions mandate to the State of Minnesota: To plant and revitalize our churches with a purpose of making disciples To serve our churches to enhance their ministry effectiveness To provide a ministry of excellence in camping and retreats in order to evangelize and build-up individuals, families and churches To operate as a link for pastors and their families toward greater personal and professional satisfaction and productivity

Can you share your peaceful country home or lake cabin with an inner-city child?Kids in Country is a program of the Minnesota Baptist Conference (MBC), created to provide inner-city children aged 8-12 years with a week-long summer adventure in the country.Host families are volunteers who live on farms, in the country or have a lake cabin. Inner-city children are chosen, screened and enrolled by urban MBC representatives as well as professionals from other Twin Cities-area organizations. While host families are diverse, they share the desire to help inner-city children experience the simple pleasures of country life. This ministry nurtures friendships, develops new interests and impacts children in ways that last a lifetime. Providing inner-city children with special attention and care amidst a family setting is one of the best ways to introduce them to the love of Christ.

In 2000, the program piloted with 10 children out on "Friendly Farm/Country" homes. The program has been growing every year. The summer of 2007 had 55 children in the program. The children said they appreciate the attention they receive from the family they stayed with on this adventure in the country. This program will be starting its eigth year in the summer of 2008.

The "Friendly Farm/Country" homes have a wonderful opportunity for them as a family to help inner city children and they find out that they receive more from this experience than they give.

Instructions on a Prayer Shawl - Love Lift for Ukraine

"You created my inmost self, knit me together in my mother's womb. For so many marvels I thank you; a wonder am I, and all your works are wonders." Psalm 139, New Jerusalem BibleSupplies:

KNIT: 3 skeins of Lion Brand Homespun yarn (Available at Wal-Mart) or Worsted yarn (4 ply). Size 11 or 13 needles. Some knitters prefer the round needles and some like size 15, although they are hard to hold. The idea is to get a loose, comfortable weave. Feel free to use the yarn of your choice!CROCHET: 4 skeins (3 oz) yarn, "K" crochet hook.

Pattern

(Feel free to use another pattern, but keep to this approximate size):

KNIT:

Cast on 57, or 63 stitches. Knit three, purl three to the end of the row. Turn and knit the purl and purl the knit. A weave pattern will develop. Knit about 2 and 2/3 skeins in pattern. Use the rest of the yarn for fringe. The fringe can be as short as 3 inches and as long as 8 or 9 inches. It is up to you.

CROCHET: (Lace shawl with fringe - approximately 24" wide and 48" long + fringe)

Fringe: Cut 144 strands of yarn. The fringe can be as short as 3 inches and as long as 8 or 9 inches. It is up to you. Fold 3 strands in half, draw through loop on ends of each shawl and tighten. Repeat for each loop.

Shawl: (An easy pattern!) Make a slip knot and then chain 84 loosely.

Row 1: Single crochet in fifth chain from hook for first loop, * chain 3, skip next 3 chains, single crochet in next chain, repeat form * across = 20 loops.

Row 2: Chain 3, turn. Single crochet in first loop, * chain 3, single crochet in next loop; repeat from * across 20 loops. Repeat row 2 until all yarn has been used.

Prayer: We suggest you weave prayer into your shawl as you knit, at the beginning or the end of the project. Many gather for a collective blessing of the shawl before it is given away. There is no right or wrong way to knit or create these mantels of love and care. Enjoy! The Knitting Ministry: Accompany each shawl with a card of encouragement and tell a little about yourself. If you so choose, enclose a picture of yourself.

A note to go along with the prayer shawl:

As you receive this prayer shawl, know that someone prayed while knitting or crocheting it. This prayer shawl has already helped one person, the person who made it, to be open to the presence of God. This person has also prayed for the one who would receive the shawl. The prayer may not have known who would receive it. Or, this shawl may have been made especially for you, stitch by stitch with prayers for you. The shawl is now yours. May you experience comfort and peace in the loving presence of God.

Please send your completed shawl to: Love Lift for Ukraine, 1901 West County Road E-2, St. Paul, MN 55112

If you have any questions, please call Donna Sahlin at 651-633-0560, Ext. 20.

Instructions for making fleece blankets! - Love Lift for Ukraine

Will you help make blankets out of fleece for this ministry? The Blankets of Love are easy to make. See below:

You need to purchase 2 pieces, 1-1/2 yards each of fleece [one solid and one print].

Place two pieces of fleece on a flat surface, wrong sides together. Cut off the salvages, making sure that the two pieces match in size.

For guides cut two pieces of cardboard - one that is a 3" square and the second that is 1" x 3". Use the 3" square in the corners of the fleece and cut out a 3" square of fleece.

Use the 1" x 3" piece as a guide to cut fringe along each side of the fleece, 1" wide and 3" deep, both pieces together.

Tie the fringe pieces together, double knot, one plain with one print, around the entire blanket. Have the solid color tie on top of the print side. The ties should not be tied too tight. NO SEWING IS REQUIRED.

James 1 says, "A pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans & widows in their troubles." Send a finished blanket to Love Lift for Ukraine!

Broaden your vision for the sister church movement in Ukrainian churches and among Romanian-speaking churches in Ukraine.Click here to see the Brochure! Can you imagine a ministry in your church which you don't need to push, plead, and promote?A ministry that transforms people, marking the lives of participants, and re-equipping them for greater effectiveness for leadership in your church. Can you imagine your people being welcomed by mayors, former communist institutional heads, school teachers, artists, and musicians-and your people using their vocations, competencies, or interests to form links with receptive Ukrainians in a time of national transition?Or imagine a partnership across cultures that mobilizes your lay people in short-term missions yet endures year after year as a treasured part of your global mission outreach. Can you imagine a mission opportunity where the first step is a cross-cultural relationship, not a request for financial support?Imagine a partnership across cultures.IS YOUR CHURCH READY?The sister church relationship is a churchto- church partnership between an American church and a Ukrainian church. It's a dynamic relationship in which the churches operate as equals-communicating, praying for each other, discussing needs, raising resources mutually, and sharing in their ministries. American sister churches often experience dramatic revitalization as the lay people get involved in a tangible missions experience. The opportunity to facilitate evangelism in a Ukrainian community and provide much needed humanitarian aid has a powerful, unifying effect on the American church.Prayerfully consider whether your church is willing and able to begin a great adventure, one which will create enthusiasm for evangelism and build relationships that last a lifetime. Once you are ready to sister a Ukrainian church, your church will need to fill out and submit a church profile, provided by Love Lift for Ukraine. In return, you'll receive a Ukrainian profile from your assigned sister church. The next step is to communicate, pray for each other and start developing family-to-family relationships. You take it to the next level by actually taking a trip to visit your sister church. From there, the ways you can partner together in shared ministry opportunities are endless! Is your church willing and able to begin a great adventure with a Ukrainian sister church?QUESTIONS? You can also donate seed money to help Ukrainians start local businesses, or sponsor local couples to attend Christ-centered marriage retreats.

At the Minnesota Baptist Conference, our fellowship of churches pledge to do together what we cannot do alone in reaching people for Christ. Our purpose is to fulfill the Great Commission in Acts 1:8 through evangelism, discipleship and church planting, in Minnesota and beyond.Over the years, we've seen God do some amazing things through our churches and ministry partners, here and across the globe. Through an array of focused, organizedand energized ministry opportunities, individuals and churches are able to help deliver the message of Christ's love. By acting upon their call, they become a part of something bigger than anything humanly possible- with eternal rewards.Choose to serve in short-term missions and you'll radically change the lives of others. You'll also experience the life changing transformation that happens when you find out where God is working and join Him.

Church Mobilization Retool Kit - Church Revitalization

The Retool Kit is designed to help leaders mobilize vital, reproducing churches. We use the term mobilization instead of revitalization for a couple of reasons. First, the end in mind is not just a vital church but also a vital church mobilized for mission. Second, the word revitalization implies the need to breathe new life into a dead church. Even the healthiest congregation needs godly leaders who tend to the process of mobilizing the body for greater kingdom effectiveness.

The Retool Kit for Church Mobilization is not a program, but a process, guided by a coach that helps a church discover healthy leaders, a biblical community, and a clear vision. It involves 20-25 people who represent a cross-section of the church. The process covers six retreats over a two-year period. One of the end results is a clearer vision for ministry, along with a three year plan. Additional outcomes are the changing of the church's DNA, personal and corporate growth, stronger community, and more effective Kingdom impact.

MOBILIZATION OF CHURCHES - Church Revitalization

Three programs of mobilization (or revitalization) are offered to the MBC churches by the MBC staff.

1.) The NATURAL CHURCH DEVELOPMENT program is offered and an MBC staff member will supply information about the program and consult with the church leadership about the program and outline its features and explain how it works. The actual program will be administered through "Church Smart Resources" 3830 Ohio Ave. St. Charles, Il 60174 - phone 1-800-253-4276

2.) The GROWING A HEALTHY CHURCH seminar is based on the book by that title by Dann Spader and Gary Mayes. It is a 5 hour seminar conducted by MBC staff member Rob Boyd and is meant to be used by a church to help them determine if their church is ready to begin a revitalization program. The staff of the MBC responds to any MBC church that requests their assistance in helping to resolve conflicts of any kind. The staff will work with the pastor and the lay leadership to seek the most appropriate manner to deal with the issues and will keep the leadership informed of the progress.

Various methods are used according to the individual situation. The Executive Minister and other staff as assigned will meet with the appropriate parties either at the MBC office or at the church and will seek to inform and mediate as necessary. If needed and appropriate, the staff will arrange a calling process whereby every person in the church who wishes to give input will be called by phone and from that a summary of the findings and some recommendations will be written up and shared with the leadership and pastor, and if they desire will be shared with the church body.

ORDINATION OF PASTORS IN THE MBC - Ordination

In Baptist polity it is the local church that actually does the ordination of pastors. When an individual pastor desires to begin the ordination process they first contact their church board to ask if the church is willing to do so. A Baptist church may ordain a pastor on their own if they wish but that ordination is then a local church ordination. If the pastor wishes to have an ordination that is endorsed by the Baptist General Conference and receive a BGC certificate of ordination the next step is for the church to contact the MBC office and ask for information about the process.

The MBC staff will send out all the information necessary for the candidate to prepare three documents: 1) Conversion and Call to Ministry, 2) Philosophy of Ministry, 3) Statement of Faith. When these are completed and sent to the MBC office a "Ministerial Guidance Committee" will be called together to study and consider these documents with the candidate. This committee is formed by two representatives from Bethel Seminary, and two MBC pastors. When this committee is satisfied a letter is sent to the church saying that they believe the candidate is ready to have an Ordination Council called by the church to examine the candidate for ordination.

The church then sets a date for the council to meet and invites all MBC churches in the area and any other nearby evangelical church that they desire, to send their pastor and up to two lay leaders to form the council. On approval of this council the church is given permission to hold the ordination service.

The History - Staff of the Pastor

In 1993, a group of Minnesota Baptist Conference pastors and laymen established Staff of the Pastor Foundation. It was born out of the nees for confidential help for pastors and their families who found themselves dealing with emotional, relational and mental-health issues.

It was recognized the there was a need for financial help to pay for appropraite counsel. There was also a need for information and reccommendation of services available.

Often, however, the overriding issue was one of confidentialality. For many pastors and their families it seemed safer to struggle alone than to ask for help and risk criticism and loss of trust, friends and ministry.

Staff of the pastor has been carefully structuctured to provide:a comfortable first contact for helprecommended optionsfinancial assistance when neededconfidentiality before, during and after any counseling program
